Many visitors wonder how to reach Giethoorn, where to park, and whether it’s really as crowded as people sometimes say. Here are five frequently asked questions about visiting and getting around the village — short, practical, and straight from local experience.
🅠 1. How do you get to Giethoorn?
Giethoorn lies in the Kop van Overijssel region, about 9 km southwest of Steenwijk.
By car, take the A32 motorway (exit 7 Steenwijk-Noord), the N333 and the N 334.
By public transport: take the train to Steenwijk station and then bus 70 or 270 (Giethoorn Express, summer only) to Giethoorn. Get off at Giethoorn-Centrum (Hylkemaweg), a short walk from the village canal.
🅠 2. Where can you park in Giethoorn?
Traffic in the old village centre is restricted — this area can only be explored on foot, by bike or by boat. Several visitor car parks in the neighbourhood of the main canal are signposted with colour codes from the N334 main road. Local businesses across Giethoorn-North, -Middle, -Centre and -South also offer parking for guests.
🅠 3. Is Giethoorn car-free?
Often called “the village without roads”, Giethoorn isn’t entirely car-free, but the historic heart is car-free in practice. Along most of the canal runs a scenic walking and cycling path. Nearby parking is available at the Meester Henkelplein (via Wethouder Harm Molweg) or behind restaurant ’t Vonder at Binnenpad 14.
🅠 4. When is Giethoorn busiest?
Peak season is July–August and sunny weekends or public holidays.
Still, “busy” is relative — only about 800 m of the 8 km-long village feels crowded at times. Most of Giethoorn and the surrounding Weerribben-Wieden National Park remain peaceful even in high season.
🅠 5. How much time do you need for a visit?
For a first impression, 4 to 6 hours are enough to explore the village, its canals, and the surrounding nature. If you really want to get to know the village and its natural setting, rent a boat and spend a full day on the waters of Giethoorn and De Wieden. Those who wish to enjoy Giethoorn and its surroundings for longer can stay overnight in a B&B, a holiday home, or at a campsite by the water.
